Secular Coalition for Arizona Board Member Jim Lippard and Director of Government Affairs Tory Anderson attended the first community meeting of the new Arizona chapter of Compassion and Choices on November 8, 2015.
The group referenced the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Compassion in Dying vs. Washington 1996:
"Those believe strongly that death must come without physician assistance are free to follow that creed, be they doctors or patients. They are not free, however, to force their views, their religious convictions, or their philosophies on all the other members of a democratic society, and to compel those whose values differ with theirs to die painful, protracted and agonizing deaths."
Our board and staff also learned that during a 2015 Gallup Poll, 69% of Americans support death with dignity and choices when facing a terminal illness. https://www.compassionandchoices.org/tag/gallup-poll/
The Secular Coalition for Arizona supports the work of Arizona Compassion and Choices and applauds their work to make physician-aid-in-dying a legal option for Arizonans.
