Christian nationalists caught speaking in tongues in State Senate after hours

Christian nationalists at the state Capitol are now very explicitly turning the Capitol itself into a religious site.

Here’s video of them speaking in tongues over the seal of Arizona in the Senate.

Normally, legislators aren’t even allowed to walk on this symbol, let alone lead a group into this chamber after hours to put their hands all over it.

The group leader seems to be Senator Anthony Kern (R-27), who has been trying to fashion himself as a religious crusader all session long. He has explicitly called for the supremacy of his brand of Christianity in all aspects of public life — which generally means punching down on non-Christians and LGBTQ+ people.

We’re still learning more about this prayer session, including its legality.

One thing we know: the Senate President never should have let this happen.

It’s the Senate President’s job to maintain order and decorum in the Senate.

If you’re as mad as we are, here’s what you can do:

Contact Senate President Warren Petersen:

Let him know how you feel about this shameful display. Remind him that Arizona largely consists of more than Kern’s brand of religious zealotry. Demand that Kern and anyone else involved in this breach face consequences for taking religious politics too far.
