S1281: EMPOWERMENT SCHOLARSHIP ACCOUNTS; REVISIONS

Status: Passed Senate Education Committee 4-3
Awaiting floor vote in Senate

Category: Secular Public Education

Bill Summary

Various changes relating to empowerment scholarship accounts (ESAs). The definition of “qualified student” is modified to include an Arizona resident who resides within the attendance boundary of a school district, instead of only a school, that has been assigned a letter grade of D or F. The list of authorized uses of ESA money is modified to include contributions to a 529 education savings account, and to limit those contributions or contributions to a Coverdell education savings account to $2,000 per year. The State Treasurer and the Department of Education are required, instead of permitted, to contract with private financial management firms to manage ESAs.
