“It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Harold (“Hal”) Saferstein announces his passing on January 19, 2023.
Hal and Doreen, who passed away a year ago, have been great friends to many organizations, including the American Humanist Association, Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF), Freedom from Religion Foundation/Valley of the Sun, Secular AZ, ACLU of Arizona, and others.
The Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix (HSGP) was their home, and ours. Over the years we have gotten together to have breakfast while enjoying fascinating speakers on every subject, to celebrate special events and holidays, share music and poetry, host visiting celebrities, and so much more.
Hal and Doreen made it possible for us to have our treasured Humanist Center in Mesa, opening up endless possibilities for how we can celebrate, learn and be of service together.
Most of all, Hal and Doreen were our dear friends. We said goodbye to Doreen last year, and now we are sad to have Hal leave us as well.
Let’s celebrate Hal’s life and our privilege to have had him as our friend for so long.”
