Arizona’s Elections: Vic’s Picks

Join us on September 20 at noon for a conversation with Victor Aronow of Vic’s Picks to talk about this year’s judicial elections. Here’s a link to Vic’s Picks for 2024.

Victor Aronow graduated from Boston College Law School in 1970 and was recruited to come to Phoenix on a Reginald Heber Fellowship, a program of the Johnson War on Poverty that was intended to breathe life into moribund community legal services programs that had basically been doing  only small contracts and divorces.  The Fellowship was for one year, and now, almost fifty five years later, he is still in Phoenix.  He would like to move back to the East Coast, but can’t give up the daily laughs of Arizona politics from Jack Williams to Kari Lake.  During his career, he has been a pro tem Phoenix City Court judge, the supervisor of the ASU  Law School Civil Clinic, founder Radio Phoenix, unsuccessful candidate for state Senate, the first member of the National Lawyers Guild to invade Arizona, and in the interim, earned a Masters to Teach English as a Second Language which took him on many adventures and travels.  He serves as a volunteer with the East Valley NAACP  Legal Redress Committee, is a mentor for new  law school graduates, and gives a big tip of the hat to Dianne Post, whom he admires not only for her politics, but her ceaseless energy in working for a better and more satisfying world for everyone.

Click here to learn more about Voter Choice Arizona, a non-partisan group of mostly volunteers donating their own time and financial support for essential tools to help Arizonans vote.

Today’s speaker, Mark Cable, has been a middle school teacher for 15 years, with 10 of those years teaching the We the People  civics program to 8th grade Social Studies students. Mark has a B.S. in Business Administration from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s in Education from Arizona State University. Mark enjoys playing tennis and pickleball, and is excited to be a part of Voter Choice Arizona/ Better Ballot Arizona.

Why Mark supports Ranked Choice Voting: Mark spent 10 years teaching young people to be active citizens.  He discussed the importance of making a well reasoned argument, and the importance of really listening in a respectful way to those who have a different point of view.  His students can do this, but they are then faced with an elections system that rewards name calling, hate and fear mongering, and other forms of negative campaigning. How can we ask young people to not be apathetic, when they continuously feel like they are forced to choose between the lesser of two evils?  We can and should do better.
