It’s Been a Week

Hey there Secular Fam, it’s been a minute. I hate when there is a lull between my Substack columns because there’s always so much going on and you’ve all been so supportive and loyal over the last 1.5 years since we launched it.

But I gotta tell you, these last few weeks have been tough on all of us. My running joke these days is “we’re living in the worst timeline ever” but it’s getting more difficult to find the humor in *gestures broadly* all of thi

Fact-Based Conservative Sighting at the DVUSD Board Meeting

It sure has been quiet in Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) these last few months, and if you ask me, Secular Fam, that’s a good thing!

In case your memory needs some jostling, DVUSD elected new leadership on the governing board. The amount of time spent trying to make sense of the things that come out of the mouths of Board Members Fisher and Paperman has been greatly reduced because President Ann Ordway runs a tight ship, and these meetings are so much more efficient.

Kooky Crackpot Karens & Banned-Book Barbies at PUSD Board Meeting

Well Secular Fam, another week, another PUSD board meeting. This meeting just so happened to occur on one of the worst days of my life. The evening of this meeting coincided with the passing of my beloved best friend, Moxie.

Moxie was a beautiful rescue pit mix that found me right before the 2020 election. She was by my side through some of the toughest times of my life, and you can read more about the most perfect dog that ever existed here. I love you, my Moxie girl. RIP.

Spring has Sprung in PUSD: Freshly Unhinged Behavior

It’s the end of April in Arizona, Secular Fam, and that means schools all over the state are in the home stretch of the 2023-2024 school year. Salary schedules have been discussed and approved, contracts have gone out to educators, and teachers, staff, and administrators are about to experience the “100 days of May,” including ditch days, end-of-year pranks, and “senioritis.” As a former high school and middle school teacher, I know that these last few weeks of the school year can be grueling, so hang in there, educators! We see you, we hear you, and we’re rooting for you to make it through the month! You’ve got this!
